Obituary
Vincent Barresi, M.D., age 73, entered Valhalla peacefully from his home on April 21, 2013. He is preceded in death by his parents Antonio Barresi of Erice, Sicily and Katherine Maranzano Barresi of Brooklyn, New York. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Beatty Barresi, PhD, RN beloved spouse of 30 years. He is also survived by his sister, Modesta Jean Gottlieb of Oceanside, Long Island, and her family, as well as Tom (brother), Melissa and nieces Kelleigh and Ashlyn Beatty, Gibsonburg, Ohio. Dr. Barresi was proud of his status as a first-generation American, the son of Sicilian immigrants. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended John Quincy Adams High School in Queens, New York and graduated valedictorian. He completed a BS Cum Laude at Washington Square College, the Greenwich Village Campus of New York University. During his undergraduate years, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Delta Phi. Dr. Barresi received his MD at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. He then completed one year of Medical Internship and a first year of Medical Residency at Maimonides Memorial Center in Brooklyn, New York. His medical training was interrupted when Dr. Barresi was drafted. He served in the U.S. Navy, attached to the 1st Marine Division in Viet Nam from August 1967 through September 1968. He then completed a second year of active duty at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Barresi remained in the U.S. Naval Ready Reserves until he received an Honorable Discharge in 1976. Dr. Barresi completed a second year of Medical Residency at the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He remained at that institution for an additional two years, completing a Fellowship in Cardiology in June 1972. He chose to complete a third year of Cardiology Training at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s College of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois. With his clinical training completed, he accepted a position as Assistant Director of the Cardiac Cauterization Laboratory at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the principal teaching hospital of Northwestern Medical School. In May 1979, Dr. Barresi relocated to Columbus, Ohio, to join a group of cardiologists in private practice, some of whom he had trained with in Philadelphia. He remained a partner of Cardiology, Inc, until illness forced his retirement in February 2012. During his years of private practice in Cardiology he occupied numerous committee positions on the Medical Staff of Mount Carmel Health. He was elected chairman of the Ethics Advisory Committee and he served as President of the Medical Staff. In December 2012, Dr. Barresi received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Medical Staff of Mount Carmel. He was a founding member of the Columbus Physicians Ethics Circle, a group which met quarterly to discuss bioethical concerns. He also was a member of a social group of retired physicians (RODEO) who met monthly for breakfast. This group was a great source of friendship and support throughout his recent illness. Dr. Barresi was very proud of his service to the Board of Opera Columbus, for almost 10 years, during the formative years of that organization’s history. His love of opera began at age 5 when his father would take him to see opera performances at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. He was a life member of the Save-the-Redwood s League, a founding member of the Thomas A. Edison Memorial in Milan, Ohio and a life member of the Mott’s Military Museum. Dr. Barresi and his wife, Barbara, shared numerous interests with equal passion. They were consistent supporters of various arts organizations, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Columbus Zoo and the Columbus Foundation. Dr. Barresi was particularly proud of his wife’s own achievements in education and her profession as an Ethicist. Barbara Barresi offers her appreciation to Jeffery Zangmeister, MD for his care and friendship over the past year. Visitation will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Sunday, April 28, 2013 from 1-4 p.m. at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 West Fifth Avenue, Grandview Heights, Ohio. There will be a private burial at Scott’s Cemetery, Huron, Ohio following cremation. The family requests that NO floral arrangements be offered. Instead, it is suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Vincent and Barbara Barresi Fund at the Columbus Foundation, 1234 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43205. Dear Barbara,
I am so very sorry for your loss. Dr. Barresi was a kind and wonderful physician. Our paths have crossed at Mount Carmel for twenty five years and he always said hello and asked how my son was doing. I could always ask a question and he would stop to educate. I miss that serious sharp dressed stride down the hall when he was on his way to care for someone. Always the professional ... Loved by patients and peers alike... He is missed. I pray that you and your family will find solace in prayer and know that he is in a better place where we will some day meet again.

Barb, I am so sorry to hear of Dr Barresis passing. He has been a huge influence in my nursing career. I remember telling him that my dream was to be a cardiac nurse when I was in nursing school and he said that he would be there if I ever had any questions. He never hesitated if I had a question or just wanted him to look at a tele strip with me. I appreciated his time and patience and also his willingness to teach. He will always have a special place in my heart. His kindness and sincerity to all those around him is a rare and special quality that all of us should possess. He will be truly missed. You are in my heart and prayers Barb. Love, Jody Leckrone

Dear Barbara,
Even though we didn't know Dr. Barresi, as a Christian it's not necessary to personally know a person to offer words of comfort during these times of great sorrow and loss. All of us have at some time experienced some of the pain and sorrow you may be feeling now. We find a true source of encouragement, comfort and hope is in God's word, the Bible. May the words of Jesus at John 5:28 and 29 be of comfort to you. "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." Barbara, may your heart be filled with warm thoughts and treasured moments of Vincent.

We are so very sorry for your loss. Dr. Barresi was a very kind and wonderful physician. He not only cared for my husband, but the whole family. We appreciated his time and patients in explaining things to us and making the process less frieghtning. Future patients can only hope that one of the thousands of lives he touched will be their Doctor, because once touched by him their care of their patients became deeply enhanced. He will be missed.

Dr. Barresi was a brilliant caring person who will be greatly missed by many people. He was my husband’s and my cardiologist and friend; an incredible doctor and a skilled listener who always knew the right thing to say and when to say it. Even as he was dealing with his own illness, he took the time to contact each one of his patients and ensure that they were going to be well taken care of. I think that says it all. He was a great man, a respected doctor and a good friend. We miss him terribly. May God bless his family and give them peace and strength

Dear Mrs. Barresi, My husband and I would like to express our sincere deepest sympathy to you and your family.. I know he was proud of you, he spoke about you sometimes while my husband was in the see Dr. Barresi. He was always on my husbands case about losing at least 20 lbs. to start. Then he would tell us about you getting him on a regiment. And how sometimes he would have to fight not to have a cookie.
He was such a fantastic doctor. We all loved him. And will always have good thoughts about him. I know why you are so proud of him.
But again, you have our deepest sympathy and prayers most of all. Love and Prayers, Cliff and Cathy York

The go-to guy for fellow doctors. The always-there for patients. A class act, made even better by his wife. A perfectionist who didn't allow the perfect to become the enemy of the good. Will I miss him?
" I feel the souls whom we have lost are held captive in some inferior being ... until the day we happen to to pass by the tree or obtain possession of the object which forms their prison. Then they start and tremble, call us by our name....and, so delivered, overcome death and return to share our life".

Mom had spoken fondly of both of you so many times, that it was nice to put faces with the names. Thank for that brief memory from the wonderful life you shared. My Deepest Sympathy to you. Each of us who knew your husband feels a profound sense of loss related to the nature of their connection. I have been your husband's patient for 14 years, so I will miss his knowledge and care. Over the years we became friends. When we met our exchanges were always the same "Ah! My favorite Sicilian cardiologist" he would reply " My favorite American Physiologist". One day,I believe, we shall again greet each other in the same way. He was a gentle man in every sense of the word. God be with you always.

Dear Barbara,
I've now worked at Mount Carmel for the past 13 years all in the field of cardiology. Dr. Baressi was so respected by his peers, nurses and patients. I so loved reading his charts as he was very thorough and thoughtful about what he wrote. He was certainly an asset to the Mount Carmel system. Please know you've been in my thoughts for quite some time. May God bless.
