Dear Mary, Our love and prayers are with you and your family. We are in Ft. Myers with Jim, or we would be at the funeral home and funeral. We are still enjoying the caricature that Tom drew when Pat retired from the Columbus Police Department. May the angels lead him into paradise. Love, Jim Mentel, Mike and Linda Mentel, Barb (Mentel) & Gary Mangini, and all the Mentel family.

Dear Mary,
I was saddened to read about your husband's death. The tribute paid to him in the Columbus Dispatch was very moving. His talents and his outlook on life were remarkable.
Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss.

Mary, I'll never forget Tom. I remember when he had the idea to start the Emerald Society. He and I met in the basement of the old Police station and held our first meeting. He was so proud. Tom will be missed by all whom he touched.I'll keep him in my prayers as he walks with God.

Ode to Tom Hayes

The wind was blowing the air was cold,
many were present in numbers untold.

One from our ranks has been laid to rest,
he was one of our brothers and one of the best.

His wife, his family and all of us pray,
Officer Tom Hayes is remembered this day.

Tom is not gone, his spirit is here.
Remember his smile and shed not a tear.

For Tom will be waiting to see us again,
With his smile, his kindness and sketch artist’s pen.

The art and his smile are gifts left behind
His strength and endurance made him one of a kind.

His suffering is over, his purpose now met,
We will miss Tom Hayes, but never forget.

Tom’s mission in life may have been a sign,
To error is human to forgive is divine.
