Obituary
Robert Paul Mone beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend died April 7, 2025. Bob was born July 23, 1934 in Columbus, Ohio. After graduating from Holy Family High School he attended the University of Dayton and the University of Notre Dame Law School. He served as a corporal in the United States Army Reserve, and following a federal judicial clerkship joined the law firm of George, Greek, King, McMahon and McConnaughey and later Thompson Hine, LLP where he spent a long and successful legal career representing Ohio's rural electric cooperatives. In 2002 the Robert P Mone power plant in Van Wert County was named in his honor. Member of the Columbus Rotary, American Bar Association, Ohio and Columbus Bar Associations and the first president of the National Generation and Transmission Cooperative Lawyers Association. He was a kind, hardworking, generous man of faith; a life-long learner with a razor-sharp memory who couldn't resist an intellectual debate, prioritizing understanding over victory. His pleasure was spending time with and sharing conversation with family and friends, especially if this included a plate of good Italian pasta. He frequently ended conversations by asking, "Is there anything I can do for you?" A lifelong booklover and collector, he could often be found in his favorite comfy chair reading. CS Lewis, CK Chesterton, Churchill, and Peter Rabbit were favorites. He lives on in the hearts and memories of his wife of 64 years, Lucille Mone; his children, Maria Mone (Jeff Bibbo), Andrew Mone (Jennifer) and Richard Mone (Jennifer); his six beautiful granddaughters, Lena and Lili Bibbo, Hannah, Sophia, Sydney, and Anna Mone; special family friend, Cheryl Roberts; and many extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert H. Mone; parents, Anne and Henry Paul Mone; and brother, Henry Andrew Mone.

Bob was a friend and mentor at Thompson Hine from 1983-1990. His contributions to the Ohio Rural Electric Cooperatives were immeasurable. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Mone Family and to Bob’s large circle of friends.

Bob was my mentor from 1998 when I joined Thompson Hine to his retirement from the practice of law. He was always willing to share his time and knowledge to train me as a young lawyer. Ultimately, he was willing to transfer his law practice to me representing Ohio's Electric Cooperatives. He was incredibly generous to do so and for that I will always be grateful.
He was a brilliant man -- second in his class at Notre Dame law school, and a legend in the electric cooperative community, representing Ohio's Electric Cooperative for over 40 years. He was so respected by the Ohio cooperatives that they named a power plant after him -- the Robert P. Mone Plant in Convoy, Van Wert County, Ohio.
Bob was a gentleman, and always dressed like one. Even on hot summer days, you were likely to see him in a suit and tie. I don't think that I ever saw him in shorts, but I am OK with that!
He was "old school." When I knew him, he didn't use a computer much, which he called "the machine." Instead, he would dictate into a microphone and recorder and have his secretary then transcribe his thoughts, which he would edit by hand, have his secretary revise, and edit and repeat the process until perfect. Actually not a bad way for a lawyer to go about things.
Bob was an incredibly kind and sweet man. When my own father passed away in February, Bob and Lu were there at the visitation, willing to offer their time and sympathies, even though they had just recently moved into First Community. That's the type of person he was.
That is not to say that Bob wasn't tough -- because he was. He loved intellectual battles, and he would make you work for your position even if you were right. But through that process he was making you a better lawyer. He knew a lot about a lot of things and was willing to share, if you were only willing to listen. Fortunately, I did.
We stayed in touch over the years, attending the same church -- Our Lady of Victor in Grandview -- and having lunch from time to time. I saw Bob only occasionally at Mass, but not because he wasn't there weekly -- he was.
I will miss him greatly -- he was one of a kind. I will always think of him in his corner office at the law firm, known and respected by all as "Mr. Mone."
