Obituary

Paul David Nunley, 61, passed away peacefully April 17, 2024 at home in Columbus, Ohio. He was born June 15, 1962 in Morgantown, WV to Robert and Ramona Nunley, the third of four children. He spent his early years growing up in the Tyler Mountain area of Dunbar, WV where he attended Tyler Elementary, Andrew Jackson Jr. High, and Dunbar High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from The University of Charleston in 1984, where he was also a proud member of ZBT fraternity. While working he completed a degree in Engineering Physics at The Ohio State University in 1990. His desire to pursue a teaching career, following in both parents footsteps, led him to a Masters of Science in Environmental Systems Engineering from Clemson University in 1994. He worked in the private sector at various stages in his career, but then finally settled into his lifelong passion of teaching. His academic career took him to University of Charleston, Ohio State, West Georgia, and Columbus State. Paul had many passions outside teaching, from travel as evidenced by his extensive library of photos from diverse places to whitewater rafting, to just being in and enjoying the outdoors as an amazing and wonderful place to be. But his true passion were his friends and family, and he valued his time and interaction with his many "brothers and sisters" from college, his academic colleagues, and countless friends from Columbus and other places he interacted with and traveled with on many occasions. It ranged from trips to Europe and the Caribbean, to championships with his darts team and the appropriately named "Maggots" softball team (including his infamous inside the park home run!) He mentored countless students and learned from them as well. No matter what he did, if he was with friends, family, or students he could be counted on to enjoy it and to especially pass that joy on to those around him. Paul is survived by his brothers, Mark (Michelle) Nunley of Clarksville, Indiana and Mike (Belu) Nunley of Estero, Florida; sister, Laura (Joe) Stafford of Charleston, West Virginia, and numerous nieces, nephews, as well as being GUncle (Great Uncle) Paul to many as well. Friends may visit on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at the John Quint Treboni Funeral Home, 1177 W 5th Ave Columbus, Ohio 43212 from 4-7 pm. There will be a Graveside Service and burial on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville, West Virginia at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Paul's memory to the American Cancer Society.
