Nicholas J. Cordetti, Sr., age 87, passed Saturday, January 22, 2011. He was born in the Columbus-area village of San Margherita to Italian immigrants Domenico Corradetti and Anna Moro; stepfather Mike Kelly (born Mate Gabelica in Croatia). He was preceded in death by his nine siblings. Nick graduated from Hilliard High School in 1941, played golf and basketball, and was captain of the school's first football team. He served in the US Army during World War II in England, France and Belgium and was part of the 540th Field Artillery Battalion, the Chemical 65th Battalion and the Normandy Invasion. He worked at General Motors in Columbus from 1947-77. Nick’s lifelong passion was golf, which began when he caddied and worked in the pro shop at Scioto Country Club during his youth. He later was a founding member of the American-Italian Golf Association. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Lucy (Lepore); devoted sons Nick, Jr. (Suzanne), Steven, James (Kimberly) and Ralph; grandchildren Todd, Stacey, Leigh, Sam and Tony; great-grandson Mason; brother-in-law Dominic Lepore (Carol); sisters-in-law Jean Carmel, Ann Montenaro, Gloria Lepore and Shirley Lepore; many nephews, nieces and cousins in USA and Italy.
The family would like to thank the staffs of Mount Carmel West Hospital and Altercare of Hilliard Post-Acute Center as well as Columbus paramedics for the expert care they provided. Friends may call WEDNESDAY January 26, 2011 at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME 1177, W. 5th Avenue, from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:30 PM. Funeral Service will be held 11:30 AM on THURSDAY January 27 at funeral home, Rev. Msgr. Romano Ciotola, Officiating. Interment will follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery.
