Obituary

Michael Thomas, whose love of life and learning led him to explore the last frontier of Alaska for several years, died Saturday, April 4, in Columbus. He was 34 years old. Born in Columbus on February 15, 1975, Michael developed a love of music early in his childhood and became an accomplished guitar player and performer. He was also a talented writer and voracious reader. Michael was particularly fond of Cormac McCarthy's novels. Following his graduation from Grandview Heights High School, Michael worked in Seward and Anchorage, Alaska, for several summers and one long winter. Later he studied at Fullerton, CA, Community College, Columbus State Community College and graduated from the Ohio Dominican University majoring in English. He was a volunteer for the literacy council. Michael worked in a number of restaurants in Alaska, Oregon, California and Columbus. He was employed at Barcelona Restaurant at the time of his death. He is survived by his mother, Cynthia Bryan of Columbus; father and step-mother, John Thomas and Gail Gregory Thomas of Columbus; two brothers, Greg Thomas of Cincinnati and Ryder Smith of Doha, Qatar; three sisters, Jennifer Thomas of Cleveland, Shannon Brush of Gahanna and Adelia Gregory of Brooklyn, NY; grandparents, Milford and Virginia Myles of Boca Raton, FL; one aunt, Carolyn Thomas of Amherst, MA; great-uncle and great-aunt William and Freda Marshall of New Concord; one uncle, Greg Myles of Cleveland; two nephews, Scott Thomas of Cincinnati and Cameron Sormaz of Cleveland; four nieces, Erica Thomas of Cincinnati, Olivia Sormaz of Cleveland and Lindsay and Sabrina Brush of Gahanna; former wife and friend, Natasha Baghat; four cousins, Deanne Castorena of West Covina, CA, Nicholas and Antoinette Myles and Margaret Begin, all of Cleveland, and many treasured friends. Friends may call FRIDAY, April 10, 2009 at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 W. 5th Avenue, from 4:00-8:00 PM. A Time To Remember Michael Service will be held 10:00 AM on SATURDAY, April 11, 2009 at funeral home. Interment will follow at the Union Cemetery, 3349 Olentangy River Road. I moved to Jacksonville Fl in 91 and before I moved from Grandview Heights, I remember Mike Thomas very well. His sense of humor= He always had a way of making me laugh when things seemed to be hectic. His sensitivity= What alot people may not know is he was sensitive to others feelings. He wasn't a spiteful person and never intentionally hurt anyone. Just a couple characteristics that I remember in his younger years as a teenager which obviously carried those into his adulthood. I am very sorry for the loss as his family, friends, and the future people of India will miss his contributions but the memories will always be cherished. Erin

We are so very sorry to hear about your loss. Cindy, we are so grateful that we had the opportunity to meet Michael last summer, while you were visiting us at our cottage on MiddleBass Island. Michael was with friends on Put In Bay and took the ferry over to Middle Bass to meet his mom's room mate from nursing school. We had a great time and Bob and I were so impressed with Michael's intresting accomplishments and his determination to get his degree. After just a short time with Michael, we appreciated his good heart and his thoughtfulness. Cindy, I have never met a mother who was more proud of her son, and rightly so!
You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Cindy,

I am so honored that you would want me share your loss. I am deeply sorry I could not be at the call. I was so blessed, however to be able to review Michael's life video. I was truly moved and so wished I had even known him as I am sure he would have been a brother and a friend. I am sure your heart longs to hold him one more time. But I know God has plans, plans that we do not understand and that Michael is being held by Angels, until one day you are once again reunited in Heaven. May you rest in knowing this. May you find peace in this time of loss here on Earth. May God bless you and keep you safe. I will be here for you, I hope you know that. -Jim

Although I never met Michael, it seems that I got to know him through speaking to his family and friends over this past week. The world has lost a special, gentle soul through an act of senseless violence. I pray that family and friends will somehow find peace.
