Julian Richard Verne, known as "Sword" to family and friends passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at 96 years of age. The nickname "Sword" was given to him by his teammates in 1932 when he played semi-pro football, because of the way he cut down the line. His beloved wife, Bea, who called him, Weines, passed away three years earlier leaving him quite bored. He lived a very simple life touching the lives of anyone he met. Being an avid sports fan, he was waiting for the Indians, Browns and Buckeyes to win a championship. He was a master at picking NFL winners and could quote any baseball stats. He started working at the age of 14 in a shoe factory, dug ditches and worked on the railroad. He operated Verne Brother's Cafe, with his deceased brothers, James and Julius, for 68 years, cashing checks for loyal patrons and railroad workers. He was always there for a friend and will be missed by many. He loved to play pinochle, talk sports and politics. The highlights of his life were his 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grand children and any child he talked with. He charmed the staff and residents at the Claremont Retirement Village and anywhere he went with his smile. Proud member of the S.F.I., the St. Clair Avenue Athletic Club, St Matthias Parish and the Mellonaires. He is preceded in death by his parents, Guilio and Philomena Verne. Brothers, Frank, Marek, German, Julius and James; many friends and in-laws. He is survived by his sisters, Viola (Egisto) DelGreco and Virginia Cautela. His children Lawrence (Kathleen), David (Pam), Thomas (Kathy), and Julie (Bill) Orr. His grandchildren, Devonie (Pat) Bennett, Tom (Alexis), Teresa (David) Nebraska, Angela (Tracey) Dwire, Michael (Beth), Stephanie (Steve) Mitchell, Robert, Kim (Mark) Glasser, Beth (Todd) Alloway Jenny (Ed) Perry, Sean & Michael Bresnen, Molly (Adam) Zuckerberg, Thomas Verne, J.D. and Daniel Orr. Twenty-four great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Friends may call MONDAY, February 25, 2008 from 4-8 p.m., at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 W. Fifth Avenue. Funeral Mass 10:00 a.m., TUESDAY, February 26, 2008 at Resurrection Cemetery Chapel, 9541 N. High Street (U. S. Route 23 North), Lewis Center (OH), with entombment to follow the Mass. Reverend Father Raymond E. Lavelle, Presider. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make donations in his name to the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium or Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Condolences may be sent via www.johnquint.com. FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE ASKED TO GATHER AT THE CEMETERY CHAPEL FOR HIS FUNERAL MASS.
