We are so sorry to learn of your father's death. You were just in here last week. It's hard to part with a parent since they've been with us our entire lives. It's a hard one. Our sympathy and prayers are with you and your family. Paulette

From 1933 until 1941, I attended St. Margaret Mary's Parochial school in Parkersburg, W.Va., under the tutelage of the sisters, Poor Child Jesus.
Sister Frances Teresa Holzberger, P.C.J., was not, if my seventy-seven year old memory serves me correctly, one of my teachers, but my love of those dedicated nuns has been with me since I was fortunate enough to have been under their guidance.

Isn't it too bad that appreciation comes so late!

I know of no one who has the history of this order in Parkersburg and would appreciate any information you would be kind enought to forward to me. Such fond memories I have of St. Raphael's convent. Once I was fortunate enough to be a part of the ceremony of a novice taking her vows to Christ....I was a flower girl, I believe. What I remember most about the convent was the pale gold aura that seemed to flow over the entire interior...I thought how strange it seemed that the sisters could be on their hands and knees scrubbing floors, or in the kitchen working over hot steaming stoves in a building that was too young for air conditioning, or simply reading quietly in the chapel and seem so peaceful, content and happy. Of course it wasn't all utopia...I realize that now but it makes for happy memories.

It is so strange that we (the students) were never informed about the nuns backgrounds or of their education's. I have had to wait until I read their obituaries to see how well educated the teachers were. It has been a delight, but how much more secure we (the students) would have felt had we known this when we transfered to other institutions of learning. I, a little Irish girl, never felt sure that my education in a small Catholic parish school, run by German nuns and dictated over by Father Francis X. Sheurmann (spelling is undoubtedly wrong) was equal to my peers in high school and college.

In reflection, my education at St Margaret Mary's under some of the dearest women I would ever know in my life,(realistically, I also learned the meaning of "bitch" only on rare ocassion) was not only equal, but superior to most of the women in my time. I never considered running for the first president of the United States, however, I did become a full professor and head of my department at a major university. There is no doubt that this, in part, was due to the nuns of P.C.J.

Thank you for sharing your Francis,

Marjorie Davidson
