Dora Sagrilla (DeCorte), age 85, departed us peacefully, the morning of Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at Whetsone Care Center, Columbus, Ohio. Dora DeCorte Sagrilla, was born November 5th, 1923 in the Township of Shortcreek, Ohio, to John and Elizabeth DeCorte, who were both direct immigrants from Italy. John and Elizabeth took a boat from Italy with their daughter Marge, and Elizabeth, then pregnant with Dora. Later her parents gave birth to Josephine DeCorte(Sargent). The DeCortes grew up in New Athens, Ohio and have told of many fond memories they had as siblings. Dora was a dedicated mother, wife, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend. Dora loved her sister Jo(Aunt Jo) and it was always hilarious to be there when they visited. They could never agree on anything and enjoyed pushing each others buttons. One has to wonder how funny those two must have been together in their childhood. We are all sure there was never a dull moment. After graduating from New Athens High School, Dora met and married Eugene Walker and they settled in Cadiz, Ohio where Dora gave birth to Jim and Jerry Walker also known as the Twins. The Twins were the center of Dora's world and made her proud as they excelled at academics and athletics. When the Twins were age 13, their father Eugene was killed in a tragic and sudden trucking accident. Instead of letting the tragedy get to her, Dora demonstrated the grit and determination she possessed, and as we also knew, her stubbornness and her un-relenting persistence. If you thought you were going to win an argument with Dora you were sorely mistaken. Or if you thought you could get one over on her, she seemed to always know you were fibbing and would then ask you the same question for five years straight every time she saw you. The second you gave a different answer, Dora would pounce, and say "I thought you said". She always kept you on your toes. Or once she got you on the phone it could take hours to end the conversation. She also loved to chat with friends and family for hours at a time. Shortly after the tragedy she met Donald Barkely Sagrilla. Or as he was know to his friends and family, Duno. Dora finally made an honest man of Don and they married September 21, 1963 at Westerville Methodist Church and thus began their new life in Columbus, Ohio. Dora graduated from Cosmetology school and began her new career while still working multiple jobs babysitting and housecleaning. Don became an electrician and before long they bought their home at 759 Harley Drive in Columbus. This became a home and refuge for the Twins, the grandchildren, and their friends. Dora would always have spaghetti or a dish ready and made sure you ate so much you had to take a nap. Oh, don’t forget the jello with fruit. As far as Dora was concerned, there wasn’t any way around it. You had to have some. She would always have her neighbor, Bill Pickering, over every Sunday and she frequently sent food over to neighbors or out to her Boys and Grandchildren with Don serving as the delivery man. Dora had a certain vitality and humor about her that took awhile to understand. Even over this last year she demonstrated greater humility, courage and selflessness that was always there but softly hidden. She would always make you laugh, with her complicated and subtle humor. Don and Dora complimented each other in tremendous ways. Duno was quiet and soft spoken and Dora was a bit rambunctious. Some of the fondest memories was when Don and Dora would have a mild disagreement, which would slowly escalate as they both dug in their heals. Then before you knew it out came the cast iron skillet and grandpa would spring out of his chair with grandma in chase. It was all in good fun. I can remember they would always be snickering. It always reminded me of the "I Love Lucy Show", when Ricky had done something stupid and Lucy let him have it. Dora adored her sons Jerry and Jim and did anything for them. She was also very dedicated to her grandchildren and was always there to help out with groceries or a little cash to go have a cheeseburger. We also wanted to thank Beverly for her kind and unconditional help as well the Hospice group. Dora will be very much missed but never forgotten. She was a character in the best and most unique sense of the word. Goodbye Dora, thanks for good times. You can now stack as many Bob Evans to go containers as you want till your hearts content. Dora is preceded in death by her twin sons, Jim and Jerry Walker, her parents: Elizabeth and John DeCorte and her sister Marge DeCorte Wolfe. Dora is survived by her sister, Josephine DeCorte Sargent, brother-in-law, Lloyd Wolfe, niece Sharon Wolfe, nephews: Keith and Mark Sargent, John Wolfe, sister-in-law, Virginia Vasbinder, grandchildren, Alan Walker, Christopher Walker, and Jennifer Walker and daughter-in-law, Debbie Walker.
