Obituary

Donald Philip Pfister, Sr. passed away Christmas Day, 12-25-2008, after a long battle with cancer. Born in Cranston, Rhode Island, in 1933, to Frank and Helen Pfister, Donald spent his childhood in the Rhode Island area. After high school and a brief stint in college, he enlisted in the Army and served in the 9th infantry division during the Korean conflict. Upon his safe return he remained an active reservist while attending Bryant college. After graduation with a degree in business administration he made a career for himself as an insurance executive. He married the love of his love, Kathleen McCormick, of Providence, Rhode Island in 1961. His worked took him to many parts of this country from Indiana to Kansas, to Colorado and finally to Ohio in 1988. Donald and Kathleen immediately caught Buckeye fever and never left. A fixture for 16 years on Grandview Avenue, Donald was always seen watering his plants on the porch, drinking lemonade and greeting fellow neighbors and "friends", as patrons made their way up the street to the ever developing Grandview Heights area to visit local theatres and restaurants. Donald relished in making others happy and "hello neighbor" was not just a salutation, but a phrase used to welcome people into his life. He welcomed many, made countless friends and Grandview Avenue has lost a heartbeat that represented the best of this community. He will truly be missed and can not be replaced. He is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years Kathleen McCormick Pfister in July of 2008. He is survived by his brother Frank Pfister his sister Shelia Angelone, brothers-in-law, Charles V. and John J. McCormick, son Donald Philip Pfister, Jr., daughters Kathleen Regina Musick, Maureen McCormick Winningham and Martha Kelly Agler in addition to five grandchildren, Keeley Musick, Noah Pfister, Emma Pfister, Joseph Musick and Keira Winningham. Friends may call TUESDAY, December 30, 2008 at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 W. 5th Avenue, from 5:00-7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 AM on WEDNESDAY, December 31 at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 1420 Grandview Avenue, Msgr. John K. Cody, Presider. Entombment will take place at a later date in Cranston, RI. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may contribute in memory of Donald to the Ohio Health Foundation, HomeReach, 180 E. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215. Condolences may be sent via www.johnquint.com.

Your dad was a wonderful man and he always made us so welcome in his home. May the knowledge that he has gone to be with his Lord and his Love, soften the sorrow you must feel at his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

The entire family joins me in sending our deepest sympathy in the loss of Kay and Don. We were unaware of Kay's death until Katie called. We saw Don only occasionally on his business trips in the past years so we were so pleased when he and Kay visited a few years ago and caught us up on the family. They were so proud of you and the wonderful grandchildren. We have lost a good and kind friend whom we will always remember for his compassion, his humor and most of all for his "Donisms".

What a wonderful write up in the obituary. I can just see him mulling about on the porch with some floppy hat on, calling "top of the mornin'" to passers-by. He did have quite an hospitable Irish personality. I'm sure he's making everyone in heaven step a little lighter (if that's even possible). Much love and sympathy to you all.
