Obituary

David E. Merz, Sr., age 82, died on Monday, October 28, 2013 at Forest Hills Care Center. David retired after 35 years of military/civil service with the 121st TFW Ohio National Guard (Air Force) at Rickenbacker ANG Base, serving three extended active duties and overseas assignments during the Korean War, Berlin Crisis and the Pueblo Incident. Involved with the Boy Scouts of America for more than 40 years as a scout, leader, religious emblem counselor and the Catholic Committee on Scouting. Awarded the St. George Medal in 1977. Member of the Red Cross Multi-gallon Blood Donor Program. Preceded in death by parents, Erwin and Lucille Merz; sister, Joan; and son, David Jr. Survived by loving wife, Vicki (Rizek) Merz of 58 years; sons, Eric of Indianapolis, Craig and Chris (Tina) and daughter-in-law, Lyla Merz of Columbus. He was passionate about his family, including grandchildren, Natalie, Greg, Nicole, Nick, David III, Victoria, Andrew and Phillip; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Addalyne; niece, Michelle Everly of Sanford, Florida; as well as sisters-in-law, Rose Fancelli, Judy Rizek, Gennie Bowman and Jean Rizek. Dave was a graduate of St. Charles Preparatory School and longtime member of St. Anthony Parish. He was a fine and caring man who treated friend and stranger alike. The family is extremely grateful for the care he received at Forest Hills. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 from 4-8 p.m., at THE JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 West Fifth Avenue, Columbus. Funeral Mass 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 31, 2013, St. Anthony Church, 1300 Urban Drive. Entombment to follow, Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers we ask you make a donation to the William H. Hall Fund for Pancreatic Cancer & Liver Research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center or to the Alzheimer's Association of Central Ohio. We are saddened to hear that Mr. Merz has passed. We will always remember him as an intelligent, kind, and interesting man. Vickie, you and Dave helped create the stability of our little neighborhood. Together, you raised four boys, all of whom we know you are very proud.

Mary and I are saddened by Dave's passing.God has called him to be his first sargent in heaven. Dave was a kind and caring person . He was like a father to our squadron members. I always looked uped to Dave .Dave loved our country and served it well.May God bless you and your family.We will keep you in our prayers.
