Obituary

Anthony J. Placenti, age 96, passed away Monday, February 4, 2013. Preceded in death by his cherished wife, Evelyn Piteo Placenti; father and mother, Frank and Maria Placenti; sister Frances Placenti and brother, Salvatore Placenti. Tony is survived by his loving sister, Tessie Sabella; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Tobi Placenti; son, Mark Placenti; and his revered grandchildren, Michael and Isabella Placenti. Tony is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews for whom he cared deeply and genuinely enjoyed. Tony was a giant of a man. With a booming laugh and a voice like thunder, he plowed through life behind a huge grin that, when necessary, he backed up with a velvet hammer. Absolutely uncompromising when it came to his ideals, Tony, a member of the “Greatest Generation,” survived the streets of New York, the Great Depression and D-Day’s Normandy invasion. After the War, he fought diligently for worker’s rights as a leader in the United Auto Workers, Local 969. A man who truly was bigger than life, the world is a much smaller place now that he is gone. Tony's family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m., on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at THE JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 W. Fifth Avenue, Columbus. Funeral Mass 10:00 a.m., on Friday, February 8, 2013, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1899 McCoy Road at Reed. FRIENDS ARE ASKED TO MEET AT CHURCH. Burial to follow, St. Joseph Cemetery, 6440 South High Street, Lockbourne, Ohio. Condolences may be sent via www.johnquint.com

Mark, Frank & Placenti Family, Yes, a "giant gentleman". I am sure that Tony is running a GM factory line in heaven for the "big guy"...I have no doubts. If not, he and your mom have a special Italian Restaurant that I am sure St. Peter, St. Paul and St. Anthony now hang out at. You have our thoughts and prayers. Love, The Hellers

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Tony was a great man and a great leader.
He was Chairman when I first hired in GM and I admired him and his work with the UAW from day one. You have my thoughts and prayers. Les Moore

Wow, what can I say, Uncle Tony was just the best. He will be missed. I can picture Him, Aunt Evelyn and everyone right now sitting in the backyard on a nice warm day eating, talking and joking like old times. I'm honored to have been able to call him Uncle. Love you guys.
