Obituary

James B. Bonk of Columbus passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2015. Jim was born October 11, 1957, to the late Robert and Dorothy (Shilling) Bonk. He is survived by his loving wife, Kimberly Brouillard; stepdaughter, Erin; dear friends, David Sholtis, David Hauck and many, many other friends. Jim retired from Ohio EPA’s Division of Environmental and Financial Assistance in 2012 after more than 33 years of service. He graduated from the University of Akron in 1982 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography. Jim loved to travel to the islands in the Caribbean, particularly Vieques. He also loved many types of music, especially the blues, and was a big fan of Cleveland’s professional sports teams and his beloved Massillon Tigers football team. Most of all, Jim loved spending time with Kim and his many friends, sharing his wonderful energy and sense of humor. A memorial service will be held in the near future. I am saddened to hear of Jim's passing. He was such a pleasant person to work with, always smiling and very helpful. He was too young to leave all of you and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Was very said to hear yesterday of Jim's passing. Remembered yesterday hiring him as a very young graduate of the University of Akron. Greatly appreciating knowing him through our years at Ohio EPA and always trusted his judgment and appreciated his work ethic. Remember him getting fish dishes from Ray Johnson and his love of travel and the Caribbean islands.

Kim, I was so very sorry to hear about Jim's passing. He was a great guy and will be missed. I will never forget his kindness to Bob as the Parkinson destroyed his body and mind. Thank you both for being our good friends.

You have my deepest sympathies. Jim and I were colleagues and I witnessed repeatedly his dedication to great public service. He always seemed to carry the sun with him and that's a tremendous gift.

I was stunned and saddened when I saw the news that Jim Bonk passed away. I was a friend of Jim's in the early 80's and have never forgotten him. I am so sad for your loss, Kim. I know Jim's good friends will be missing him terribly, too. You are in my thoughts.

Jim's passing has brought profound sadness. I worked with him during my two tours with OWDA and admired his professionalism, knowledge, compassion and dedication to our environment. We chewed on many a dilemma together, always with wit, grit and commitment. He made all of his co-workers better and we appreciated his character and friendship above all. I have missed Jim since his retirement and hoped he would open a dive shop in Vieques, because that seemed to be his happy place. With prayers for grace, peace, strength and sympathy....smack

I worked at Ohio EPA with Jim and was very sorry to hear of his passing. We worked in different divisions so I probably spent less time with him in the office than at after work happy hours. We haven't stayed in touch since our retirements, but I did want to pass along my sincere condolences to the family.

I am so saddened by this news. What a amazing person Jim was and in my memory always will be. I have so many wonderful memories of Jim. His kindness was endless. I know many people awaited him in heaven. I am sure his old friend Russ Stein was one of the first to greet him.Remember his smile and carry it with you. So sorry for your tremendous loss.

I received a message today that there was a Black Horse gathering tomorrow (7/21/15) at 6p, and I started looking up some names of old friends.

I searched Jim's name, and that is how I found this very sad news.

In my experience, Jim was friendly to everyone and a joy to be around. He had a distinctive laugh, and I always looked forward to seeing you and him.

I know he loved you, and I hope you find solace in that fact, along with all the wonderful memories of the times you spent with him.
