Obituary

Louis P. Florio, long time resident of Hamilton and prominent educator, coach, and businessman, passed away at his home in Madeira Beach, Florida on Tuesday, April 25, 2017. He was 91. Mr. Florio, who was born in Columbus, Ohio, graduated from Miami of Ohio in 1948 and after two years of military service during the Korean War, began a career in education as a teacher and football coach at Hamilton High School. He moved over to Garfield High School when it opened in 1959. He later served as principal of Harding and Wilson Junior Highs, before becoming principal of Hamilton High School when the two high schools were consolidated in 1981. He retired in 1987.
"Coach" Florio, as he will be remembered by many, won over 100 games as head football coach at Hamilton High School and Hamilton Garfield. The high points of his coaching career were his undefeated Garfield team of 1966 and his subsequent selection as the head coach of the South All-Star team for the 1967 North-South All-Star game, a game won by the South.
Many area residents were taught to drive by Hamilton Driver Training School, which Mr. Florio started in the late 1950's. He owned and operated the school until he sold it upon his retirement. Mr. Florio was honored by the city of Hamilton with a "Lou Florio Day" in July of 1989 for his contributions to Hamilton and Butler County and for his positive influence on hundreds of students and athletes during his career. He has been enshrined in both the Hamilton Hall of Fame and the Butler County Hall of Fame He was preceded in death by his wife, Margery. He is survived by his three children Jeffrey, James, and Katherine; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren; and his sister, Genevieve Mulholland. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 12, 2017 from 4-7 p.m., at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 West Fifth Avenue, Columbus, (OH).
