Obituary

Steven V. Hall, age 44, passed away on February 17, 2015 at the OSU James Cancer Center where he has undergone treatment during the last 18 months. He was born March 15, 1970 in Lima, Ohio. He graduated from Wayne Trace High School in 1988 where he earned 11 varsity letters and was class valedictorian. He deeply loved the people of Payne, Ohio and was thankful for his upbringing there. Steve graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1993. He went on to obtain a master’s degree in education from Ohio Dominican University. While at The Ohio State University, Steve played basketball for the Buckeyes for four years. During that time, he was part of two Big Ten Championship teams. Steve was named an OSU scholar athlete each of his four years and was an academic all Big Ten athlete for three years. He is survived by his wife, Kellie (Leggett); children, Eli and Emma; parents, John and Rose Ann; brother, Bill (Tricia) Hall; sister, Angie (Kenny) Speice; nieces and nephews, Lauren, Justin, Meagan Speice, and Zachary and Ethan Hall; grandmother, Marie Hall; mother-in-law, Vicki Leggett (Terry); sister-in-law, Jodie (Leggett) Jones; brother-in-law, Scott Jones; nephews, Easton and Isaiah; and grandmother Kate Swaldo. Steve was a beloved teacher and coach at Grandview Heights High School for the past 18 years. While teaching math, he was known for his sense of humor and treating his students, and everyone he encountered, with kindness and respect. While coaching multiple sports, he valued his time in the gym and on the field of play. He especially valued all the lessons sports have to offer. Above all, Steve enjoyed time spent with his family. He treasured time spent outdoors—hiking with his family from the top of the Smoky Mountains and to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the Steve Hall Memorial Scholarship Fund for the benefit GHHS students (mail to 1021 Avondale Avenue, Columbus, OH 43212) or the Jimmy V Foundation (www.jimmyv.org). Steve appreciated the care he received from his doctors at the James and especially the nursing staff on the 19th floor. A future Pelotonia team will be formed in his honor as a way to give back to OSU and the James. His family will receive friends on Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 West Fifth Avenue, Columbus (with a Prayer Service at 8 p.m.). His funeral Mass is Monday, February 23, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 1559 Roxbury Road (Marble Cliff). Burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Lewis Center. Condolences may be sent via www.johnquint.com.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Steve's passing. It was a privilege to know and work with him at Grandview. What an excellent role model as a teacher and coach. May you feel God's love and support. Thank you, Lord, for Steve Hall.

Diane and I send our deepest sympathies to the entire Hall family. Steve grew up with our children and we all had the deepest respect for him. He was a fine young man and will be missed. We remember well his days playing basketball and considered it a great honor that he was selected to play ball for the Buckeyes. We were so proud of him. Yes Steve will be missed but he left his precious mark on our little community, the state of Ohio and the nation. We will pray for you forever.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Steve was a great humble guy. When my son Jackson was in 7th grade he badly wanted to make the basketball team. He did the numbers and was afraid might get cut. We asked Steve for advice, but he simply told us to meet him at the gym. Steve, after having already taught and coached all day, spent the evening working with Jackson, teaching him the drills he would need to know, and giving him confidence. Steve refused any payment of any kind saying, "basketball has been good to me, this is how I pay back." Jackson made the team, which was really important to him at that time. Jackson still fondly recalls Steve's selfless act of kindness that helped him so much. Steve impacted so many people with these humble, yet truly meaningful acts of kindness.

What a great person. Steve had a tremendously positive influence in Payne, as well as the surrounding community area, by the way he carried himself, and he touched so many peoples' lives. He consistently showed what it meant to treat everyone with kindness and respect. I will always remember the great times that we had growing up. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Steve was my freshman basketball coach at Bishop Ready High School; I have many great memories around our BGSU summer camp, him driving me home to West Jefferson after practice, and the undefeated season. Steve was by all measures an exception coach, role model, and human being.

I am so sorry to hear of another wonderful life lost to Colorectal cancer. The Leveque Tower will be lit BLUE the month of March in recognition of colorectal cancer awareness month. It is BLUE to remember, to give hope and to inspire people to take action against colorectal cancer. When you see the light know that people are thinking of you and Steven and all the lives lost to this awful disease. We had an event last night BLUE FOR THE NIGHT and one of the speakers, Howard, had a moment of silence for Steven. Very sad. I will continue my advocacy against colorecatal cancer for Steven and all lives lost.
