Obituary

Toshie Gillis, age 83, died on November 22, 2014. One of five children, she was born July 26, 1931 in Yokohama, Japan, the daughter of the late Mahitsu and Mayamura Aniya. She married Donald Gillis in 1955 and immigrated to Wellston, Ohio. In 1970, she moved to Columbus and completed training as an x-ray technician at Riverside Hospital. She later became an ultrasound technologist and retired after 44 years of service at Ohio Health. Toshie earned a bachelor's degree in Business from Otterbein University. Throughout life she embraced her Japanese culture. Toshie traveled to Japan many times to visit her family and friends, accompanied by her children and grandchildren, whom she wanted to share her traditions and customs with. Through the years, she provided support to Japanese students and professionals while they attended either OSU or completed residencies at Ohio Health or Honda Corporation. She assisted with language translation and the understanding of western culture. During her retirement, Toshie traveled abroad and loved spending time with family and friends. She lives on through her sons, Jeffrey (Joan) Gillis and John (Kelsey) Gillis, both of Columbus; grandchildren Michael (Jessica Matthews) Gillis, Sarah Gillis of Columbus; Jed (Tina) Gillis of Fort Worth, Texas; Matthew Gillis of Dallas, Texas; and Christopher Gillis of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Toshie leaves behind four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, and a sister and brother in Japan. Friends may call on Saturday December 6, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 West Fifth Avenue, Columbus (OH). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ohio Health Hospice, (180 E. I met your Mom so many, many years ago. She was so young when she came to the U.S. and I cannot imagine how difficult it must have been for her coming to such a new and culturally different place. My Mom and Dad loved her dearly as did we all. May God bless you with many happy memories of her and I believe she is in a much happier place. She leaves an empty spot in my heart. You all take care of each other as she would have wanted. With love, Dorothy and Son Kenny Ford

I worked with Toshie during the 1970 - 1980 's at Riverside Methodist Hospital. What a fun loving person. We worked night shift together - she would bake blueberry pies for my fiancé.

My fondest memory was the night we did x rays on Bing Crosby. He had swallowed a fish bone at a dinner while attending the Memorial Golf Tournament. We provided a wet cloths and bedside emesis basin due to being nauseated!! Our famed moment with the original singer of : " I'm Dreaming of A White Christmas". I think of her every Christmas holiday.
Heaven has ordered home a great angel!
My sympathies and great joy for have known your loved one.

I also worked with Toshi at Riverside for many years. Her work ethic was like no other and worked circles around all of us there and always with a smile on her face.
My Sympathies to you all, she was a gem.

I worked with your Mom on night shift at RMH. I was her replacement when she became RMH first Ultrasound technologist. She was the most energetic and knowledgeable technologist I have ever worked with in my entire career. I remember her fast pass walk down the halls of Riverside. On one occasion she was limping and she told me her knee was bothering her, she had it all wrapped up and that did not slow her down, she was an amazing person! My heart goes out to the family and their loss.
