H. Richard "Dick" Mercer, 87 of Westerville. Oh. Died on Monday July 21, 2014, following a brief illness. Born in Columbus, Christmas Day, 1926 the first born of Hugh and Catherine Mercer. Dick was a graduate of Holy Name Elementary, Aquinas High School and attended Ohio State University. He honorably served his country in the Army Air Corp at the end of WWII. Dick was a successful, caring Independent Grange Agent, owning Mercer Insurance Agency for 57 years. Dick and his new bride, Joan began their married life in Minerva Park where they were active in civic affairs and reared their family. In recent years moving to Westerville to be nearer their children and grandchildren. There were few school events or sport events that Dick was not present to encourage and cheer on his grandchildren. A devoted Catholic by faith and longtime parishioner of St. Patrick Church, he also sang in the choirs at Holy Name and Sacred Heart Church. He was a lifelong health enthusiast who enjoyed daily walks and swimming. His favorite motto was, "You've got to keep moving." In addition to his church, Dick was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He lived for his family and always put them first. He also treasured a close relationship with his siblings and extended family members. Preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Eileen and her husband Chuck Sullivan and Kitty Lou and her husband Joe King of Columbus. Survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Joan (Luckhaupt) Mercer; four loving children, son, Mark Mercer of Dublin; daughters, Christine (Mitch) Grindley, Nancy (Jim) Richards, and Molly all of Westerville and Molly's close friend, Bob Murphy of Dublin. Grandchildren; Brian Grindley, Katie (Patrick) Hesketh, Kristin Grindley all living in Chicago, Allison Richards, Kelly Richards and Andrew Richards of Westerville. Also surving are his sister, Mary Alice (Tom) Johnston, Columbus; brother, Jim (Charlene) Mercer, Pickerington; sister, Ann Marie (J.R.) Elkins, West Virginia; brother, Mike (Connie) Mercer, Westerville; and brother, Phillip (Susie) Mercer, Jefferson City. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who he cherished seeing at annual family gatherings. Friends may call on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 (Today) from 5-8 p.m., at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 West Fifth Avenue, Columbus. Funeral Mass 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, July 24, 2014, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 280 North Grant Avenue, Columbus. Burial to follow, Resurrection Cemetery.
