Karen and I had the pleasure of knowing Elmo for
over 20 years. We shared many meals at our home
and road trips to NY, Pittsburgh Lexington Cincy Cleveland Detroit, Athens,Ohio Champaigne Ill and Washington,DC.We attended many college basketball and football games, Major League Baseball and Horse Races including the Brown Jug and Keeneland every April and October. Elmo was most at home when he was doing something sports related or with a good stiff drink in his hand. He had a very filling life. I remember one trip home from Keeneland it was close to 11 pm when we arrived and all of us could barely keep awake and Elmo was going out drinking when we dropped him off in Grove City we were all about 30 years his junior.
Every year when we went up to the Jug he would tell me about all of his partying over the years at various locations between Columbus and Delaware. We saw hundreds of games over the years between the Clippers and the out of town games.
He had some regrets but I think he was happiest
watching athletic events either humans or horses.
He was a loyal friend and had a great memory. We had a trip to DC a couple of summers ago and he and Frank Howard told stories of their friendship over 50 plus years. I know Frank truly enjoyed Elmo's friendship. That weekend will go down as one of the best weekends of my life. We went to MSG to see St.Johns play in the NIT and had dinner with the team both nights. He was amazed at how today's teams ate compared to getting a cup of coffee and a sandwich. I know if there is a game
or a horse race in heaven Elmo is probably sitting in the stands admiring the performance. Sit back enjoy and the next rounds on me. We will all miss you

Elmo was a wonderful person – a very humble man. I played basketball against him the 1960s at the St. James the Less Gym. There were Big Tom Poliseno, and Little Tom Poliseno, Jack Dennis, Dan Severance and a lot of good players. Elmo must have been about 39 years old, but he had fantastic moves around the basket, lots of sweeping-type hooks and lay-ups, and I could see that he was still an excellent player and must have been above the best when younger. My condolences to his family.
