Obituary

Sr. Mary Thomasina John, P.C.J., born March 27, 1927, in Wheeling, West Virginia, entered Eternal Life on Saturday, January 9, 2016, in Columbus, Ohio. Mary John, born to Lebanese immigrants, Sadie and Thomas John, began her education taught by the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus in Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite parish's elementary school, in Wheeling (WV). She began her 'dream journey' when she entered the Poor Child Jesus community in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Her 58 years of ministry began in St. Francis Xavier School in Parkersburg; later teaching in Illinois, West Virginia and, finally, in Columbus, Ohio, where she was the only Sister on staff at the newly established St. Timothy School. Sr. Mary Thomasina also served the community as superior in various convents in the American Province. Her final active ministerial involvement was at Our Lady of Bethlehem Convent and School in Columbus, where she was superior of the convent as well as administrator of Our Lady of Bethlehem Early Education Center and part-time teacher. In 1999 Sr. Mary Thomasina moved to the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse in Columbus with the remaining six P.C.J. Sisters in North America, all of whom had preceded her in death. Her final years were lived in Mohun Hall, where she experienced continuing great care. As she wrote: "I am most grateful to the Holy Spirit for guiding me here and to the Sisters for their acceptance of me from the time of my arrival. Their heartfelt, warm and friendly welcome has been a Godsend to me. May God bless and reward them for their love, hospitality and generosity, and may the fruits of their many works abound and flourish where they journey - near and far." In her final years, Sr. Mary Thomasina often expressed her gratitude to those who supported her earthly journey. She wrote, "I thank God first and foremost for the gift of my vocation; my parents, siblings, relatives; P.C.J. and Dominican Sisters and priests; and families and friends I've known in my years of serving God’s people - particularly the children, whom I have sought to lead to Jesus." Surely, our God delights in welcoming you home, Sr. Mary Thomasina. May you enjoy your eternal reward in God's presence with your dearly loved family, Sisters and friends! Please join us in prayer for Sister Mary Thomasina with her cousin, Sr. Sharon M. Peters, P.C.J. and the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Visitation 10-11 a.m., on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at St. Mary of the Springs Chapel, 2320 Airport Drive, Columbus, with her funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial, 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Mt. Sister Thomasina was my 5th grade teacher, and became a good friend of my mother. At a young age, I wanted to become a nun, and Sister Thomasina was my inspiration. Even though my religious career didn't last long, her spirituality has always been a great example to me. I was glad I had the opportunity to express that to her when I took my Mom to visit her over at the Mohan Center. I feel like I have another angel in heaven.

Sr. Thomasina was my teacher in the first and second grades. At that time she was a Postulant with a loving smile, patience and encouragement for each one of her pupils.
I had the opportunity several years ago to tell her how much she had influenced my life. May she rest in peace and my condolences to her family.
Sincerely, Susan Nedeff Cox

Sister Mary Thomasina was the administrator at Our Lady of Bethlehem, when I was in kindergarten (mid-70s). In the decades since, I would run into her only a handful more times, but she always recognized me, and greeted me her beautiful, warm, & open smile, and always with a hug. To me, she was eternal, and while her time on the Earth is done, I know, without a doubt, that she has been welcomed into Heaven, with the same kind of warm, open smiles and hugs. She is one of a kind, and will forever be My Favorite Nun. I am very honored to have known her.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Sr Mary. Her faith and devotion to Jesus have always been an inspiration to all who knew her and I shall miss our phone conversations as well as her letters. We are comforted by the fact that as she prayed for all of her family while on earth, she will certainly continue to do so while she is resting in the presence of her dearly beloved Jesus whom she served so well during her sojourn on earth. May her memory be eternal.

Sister Thomasina was my kindergarten teacher in 1979.

The last time I saw her was as an adult at Ohio Dominican almost 10 years ago. The nuns were having a prayer service for the new president of the university, and I saw her from across the room. That little kindergartener inside of me filled with excitement! Memories of a teacher who helped to shape the person I am today flooded my mind. I could barely contain myself!

When I approached her to say hello, wondering if she would remember me, I was immediately greeted with a warm hug. Still thinking she was just being friendly and not really knowing me, I asked if she remembered me. Her instant reply was, "of course I do, Jamie. I would recognize those cheeks anywhere!"

We fondly spoke for a few minutes and parted with one more hug. I will always cherish that last goodbye and know, with great faith, that she is now walking amongst the angels.
